President’s Fund to support the overall development of the University

As a Special Private School Corporation, OIST is granted by the Japanese government the administrative freedom to take innovative initiatives. The Japanese government’s subsidies ensured the University start out with a solid foundation and grow at an impressively fast pace in the first years. However, the long-term plan for the University is to reduce this dependence and increase the amount of funding from donations and partnerships. Your support is vital to the future of OIST.

OIST Research Fund (supporting OIST's strategic research plan)

From quantum sciences, to environmental science and climate change, to health and wellbeing, OIST Research Fund is the vehicle to bring philanthropic support to strategic research projects as determined by the university's research management.

The President's Fund drives the overall development of the University. The OIST Talent Fund recognizes that the University is only as strong as its human capital and retaining and attracting world class talent is essential to its success. The Talent Fund provides flexible financial resources for use in recruiting and retaining top caliber individuals at OIST.

The Student Initiative Fund is a vehicle to provide students with an opportunity for growth, enabling them to engage in activities that enrich our community beyond research and aim to connect and integrate everyone into this beautiful island community. Your donation will empower students in their initiatives to contribute to the OIST and local communities and Okinawa at large.

The Educational Outreach Program enables OIST to introduce the excitement of sciences to Okinawan youth and help them to explore new learning and growth opportunities as the world we live in is being transformed by science and technology.

Scientific discovery expands the boundaries of human knowledge and deepens our understanding of the world around us. It is work driven by curiosity, dedication, and courage. And it carries responsibility.

The Shohei Suzuki Research Safety Fund was established in memory of Dr. Shohei Suzuki, a beloved member of the OIST community whose passion for marine research left a lasting impact on colleagues and students alike. His commitment to science continues to inspire us.

This fund supports efforts to strengthen research safety practices across OIST, helping to ensure that discovery is pursued within a culture of care, vigilance, and shared responsibility. Through this commitment, we honor Dr. Suzuki’s legacy and reaffirm that excellence in research must always be accompanied by an unwavering commitment to safety.

Coral reef

Recreation Services connects OIST with the Okinawan community through shared activity, learning, and engagement. Programs promote healthy lifestyles while building meaningful relationships across cultures and backgrounds.

Because Recreation Services is not supported by government subsidy funds, philanthropic support is essential. Your gift helps sustain inclusive programs that strengthen health, connection, and community wellbeing.

Haarii

The Coral Project is the world's first project to cultivate and plant corals with genome analysis. The project will protect the clean ocean of Okinawa and lead to the preservation of biodiversity and environmental conservation.

Our teachers and support staff shape the earliest experiences of our children, nurturing their curiosity, confidence, and sense of belonging each day. Teacher Appreciation Week is a chance to honor the care, patience, and heart they pour into our community. Gifts to this fund will help us celebrate them in meaningful ways and ensure they feel the gratitude they so deeply deserve. 

iGEM Okinawa is a united team of students from four Okinawan educational institutions, including OIST, and proud "Gold Medalists" at the 2025 world competition. Our mission is to apply advanced synthetic biology to solve diverse challenges facing Okinawa - from agricultural pest control to environmental and health issues unique to our islands. Your donations fund our international competition travel and efforts to translate research into local startups. Support our young innovators as they build a sustainable and innovative future for Okinawa.

Diversity Impact Program

When OIST was first established, we identified diversity and inclusion as one of our core values. Valuing diversity and inclusion means that we embrace access to success for all members of the OIST community. By creating an environment that is attractive to and supportive of all employees and students, we honor our differences and demonstrate our commitment to treating everyone with fairness and respect, irrespective of the group with which they identify. The OIST Diversity Impact Fund was created to inspire individuals and/or organizations at OIST to identify creative ways to make OIST more diverse. Projects celebrating diversity and inclusion will be provided funding to make educational, cultural and/or social opportunities available to members of OIST or the broader Okinawan community.

SDG Initiative Program

In response to the United Nation 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and in recognition of our hometown Onna Village being selected as one of Japan’s “SDGs Future Cities”, OIST launched a university-wide sustainability initiative in 2021 within the framework of 17 sustainable development goals. Donations can be designated to specific projects listed under this initiative, or be general to encourage new ideas, spread learning, and expand collaboration for sustainability.
